Lauryn Hill’s chart-topping solo debut came out when I was in college, so I will always have special associations with those songs, but “Doo Wop (That Thing)” is a perfect hip hop song by just about anyone’s standards.
Still, Colombia-based producer Quantic and Chilean MC Ana Tijoux take it to the next level with some tropical flare – some Cumbia sounds, horns, accordion and more. I LOVE this version.
It’s out now on 7” vinyl, with a B-side covering “Entre Rejas“, a track from accordionist and singer Lisandro Meza.
Quantic has been very influential in Latin music in recent years, always nodding to the past while simultaneously pushing things forward with a number of soulful releases and collaborations.
Ana is always inventive, with an incredible flow that set her apart the minute she arrived on the music scene. (and Thom Yorke is a fan!)
They met at SXSW and their collaboration on this is a one-off, but I would love to hear more!
