RVNG (as in Revenge) Intl launched a project called FRKWYS (think Freakways) a while back. The aim of the project is to pair up contemporary musicians with their progenitors.
For the ninth instalment, L.A’s Sun Araw and M Geddes Gengras have collaborated with The Congos (who played with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry) & have created a brilliant album called “Icon Give Thank”.
If this first taster track is anything to go by, it’s going to be a brilliant album. It’s a bit of a risk to call your tune “Happy Song”, but fortunately it pays off!
This track has literally had me in a hypnotized state recently.
The psych of Araw & Gengras combine perfectly with the tenor falsetto harmonies of the Congos’ vocalists… can’t get enough of it!
Sun Araw, M. Geddes Gengras, & The Congos – Happy Song by RVNG Intl.
The album is due out on April 10. It was recorded in St Catherine, Jamaica (home of The Congos) & the musicians were filmed as they were making the album. You can watch an excerpt of the film Icon Eye, released on the same day, below.
