The Week Ahead: Today’s Top Tune 9/3 – 9/7/18

Written by

This week, all of the artists featured on Today’s Top Tune will be coming to Southern California in the next few months! We kick things off with RÜFÜS DU SOL who’s got three sold-out nights at Shrine Expo Hall in early November.  Andrew Bayer is next on deck, gracing Exchange in December. British producer Ross From Friends takes over Lot 613 in November. The slippery sound of serpentwithfeet can be heard at The El Rey Theatre in October. And KCRW favorite Brett Dennen opens for Jason Mraz at The Greek in September.

“Solace” takes many forms, but in this case we’re talking about the forthcoming album that live-electronic trio RÜFÜS DU SOL took a year to write and record in Venice, CA. Due this fall, their album occupies the intersection between dynamic indie music and emotive House. “Underwater” is influenced by the austere desert landscapes and beauty of the California coastline.

Tuesday, Sept 4 Andrew Bayer “Your Eyes” featuring Ane Brun

It took D.C. native Andrew Bayer five years to make his third album, but it may be his most defining work to date. Relying less on traditional dance floor beats, Bayer turns to Norwegian singer/songwriter Ane Brun to pay tribute to artists like Kate Bush and Sade on the energetic gem, “Your Eyes.”

Wednesday, Sept 5 Ross From Friends “Project Cybersyn”

British producer Ross From Friends, AKA Felix Clary Weatherall, hands over the release of his debut album to Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ label, offering up an intricately-layered sonic palette. Careful with each & every sound, Weatherall taps into the influence his dad has had on his musical upbringing. We’ve been enjoying “Project Cybersyn,” which has only just started its ascent up KCRW’s Music Top 30 list.

Thursday, Sept 6 serpentwithfeet “invoice”

Avant-garde vocalist and performance artist, Josiah Wise, AKA serpentwithfeet, put out a stunning debut album earlier this summer. On “invoice,” Wise evokes the wide-eyed curiosity of his childhood.

Friday, Sept 7 Brett Dennen “Home Away From Home” Live on MBE

KCRW favorite Brett Dennen is known for his breezy pop songs, but his newest batch of tunes mines the LA-based singer’s personal life for inspiration. On a recent visit to MBE with his band, Dennen performed “Home Away from Home,” and let us in on how the song came about.
