Warships: Local Band We Love

KCRW DJ Chris Douridas started spinning Warships earlier this year and every time he put it in a set, it caught my ear.

Their indie pop is just my style and when I found out they were local, I only loved them more. He’s on record calling them “one of the best unsigned bands in the country.”

The band released their debut EP “Shadows” in June and we’ve got a special treat – a demo version of a new track called “Haymaker”, from a forthcoming full length. It’s a melodic pop anthem that just soars.

I hear a bit of Band of Horses, a dash of The Shins and some Local Natives’ style harmonies, especially on “Heater”, a highlight from the EP that is also available as a download here. That last comparison isn’t surprising as their producer Raymond Richards worked on the Natives’ debut!

Warships singer Edson Choi, originally born in Brazil to Korean parents, has been on the local scene for a bit, formerly playing with Americana/folk group Dusty Rhodes & the River Band. He’s proudly going pop with Warships and we look forward to hearing more!

The band plays the Echo Park Rising festival on August 17 and has a show at the Bootleg on August 26.
