What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

As the summer winds down, we’ve had a week of beautiful weather. Hovering around the high 70s and low 80s and cool nights. Excellence. The hottest day of the year is probably still ahead of us (hottest day on record was September 27th, 2010 when we hit 113 downtown), but it’s been such a mild summer, I don’t think anyone will complain… much.

On to the post office bounty!

1) 7″ vinyl – New singles from The Jayhawks and Extra Classic, a favorite from SF who explore a dub inflected reggae tone on their two singles and upcoming full length on Manimal Vinyl Records. Definitely a band to watch. Lots of buzz on these cats.

2) We Were Promised Jetpacks “In The Pit Of The Stomach” – Another one of those Watermarked “if you play it we will know!” CDs. I don’t understand the logic of wanting all radio stations to play only one song at a time from a new album. I never buy an album based on one track. Whatevs. I’ll give it a listen, BUT I WON’T PLAY IT FOR YOU! (sorry; eventually, probably)

3) Superchunk “Foolish” – Now we’re talking! A classic 90’s band with a classic 90’s release. Merge (Superchunk’s label) has been on the reissue train of late and it’s exciting. They have so much great music in their library. The first track on this album, “Like A Fool”, is a stunner. One of my favorites from them.

4) Drag City Records package – Three awesome (relatively) new releases from Drag City. The Chicago label recently issued the Sic Alps record, is helping to distribute the new Sun Araw cd, and has a brand new release from P.G. Six, of 90s weird urban folkers, The Tower Recordings. Rocking a 70s music vibe, the album is stellar and sure to be a favorite on the show. Still hoping to get other new releases from the label, especially the reissue of the gorgeous self-titled album by These Trails. Don’t wait for me tho, go out there and get it. Sure to please any fan of folk, psych or psychy folk… or folky psych. Seriously, one of the most beautiful records I’ve ever heard.

Honorable mentions include new stuff from Caitlin Rose, Dum Dum Girls, Warm Ghost and the digital release of the week is from indie rock super group, Wild Flag. Easily the most satisfying rock record, front to back, that I’ve heard all year. So excited to see them when they pass through LA in early November!

Okay! I’ll be playing some of this and so much more on Sunday night.

Cheers,
Chuck P.
