What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Slightly warmer days over the past week, but still gorgeous LA weather. The KCRW fund drive is in full effect, and we’re all still reeling from the Henry Rollins two-hour mega marathon bizarro world comedy style pitch-o-rama on Saturday. Wowsers. I don’t think Anne Litt said much, aside from what Henry wrote for her.

It was really incredible and a few highlights have been posted on the KCRW blog for you in case you missed it, or like me, want to hear it again. Maybe next drive, we can get all Jerry Lewis on Henry and make him do a real marathon on air. Maybe just 24 hours straight. Can you imagine the insanity in hour 23? Boggles the mind.

At any rate, a really interesting haul this week at the post. A lot of the normal cool stuff, but a few rather disturbing releases… or releases with disturbing artwork. Check it…

1) OM vinyl – starting off with 3 gorgeous 12″s from the always excellent OM Records. Colored vinyl is always welcome and the patriotic blend here is really spectacular.

2) The Jim Jones Revue “Burning Your House Down” – flat out blues rock a la Jon Spencer from the UK. While this photo isn’t that disturbing, the idea of burning someones house down doesn’t really set a warm fuzzy feeling in ones heart. The music rips, tho… I’ve heard these guys before. Looking forward to getting the skull peeled back.

3) Sean Smith “Huge Fluid Freedom” – Ick. Worse than seeing blood spill out of something, is actually seeing the something it’s spilling out of, especially when it’s a cute furry little something. I’m no tree hugger (shh, I really am, but don’t tell anyone), but seeing a little fawn bloody on the highway is a bit disturbing. I’ll probably be able to set that aside and check out the music, because the first few words on the front sticker mention instrumental and avant, two things i really enjoy. However, some releases may be a little too frightening to even crack open. And I’m looking at you…

4) Forty Winks “Bow Wow” – At first glance, i was intrigued by the album cover, but it took .6 seconds for me to realize what I was seeing, then the dread set in. Sure, a full body nylon hose probably looks good on some people. Not many, but possibly some. HOWEVER. I bet it doesn’t work on most dudes. FOR SURE, it doesn’t work on this dude. Unless that’s what he was going for, then daddio… you NAILED IT. Seriously tho… it was hard enough to look at the front cover, but when I turned it over, my stomach gave way and I had to choke back my lunch. I will spare you the nightmare image.

Aw, heck with it. Here it is.

Scary, right? Here’s hoping I can summon the constitution to crack the CD open and actually listen to what’s on it. Somebody hold me.

Honorable mentions include the new double CD reissue of the Oh Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack, featuring a full cd of bonus cuts (!), the new Chad Valley CD, plus the new single from The Rapture, “How Deep Is Your Love”, and while it isn’t the BeeGees cover I was hoping for, you can download the goodness for free right here.

Thanks for reading and thanks for giving this fund drive. We’ve been raising great money over the past few days here at 89.9 The Spear (as Henry refers to it), and we really appreciate the help.

We’re not out of the woods yet, but with your help we can set ourselves up for another 6 months of impeccable NPR programming and original music programming via the enthusiastic hosts here at Tha K who love share what they know.

Seriously… there is little else that makes me happy as sharing what I’ve found over the past week. I hope you enjoy it too.

All the best,
Chuck P
