What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

July gloom? I’m alright with it. We’ve already had a few really hot days here in LA, so the relief is nice. Saw Omar Souleyman at The Echo last night. Place was packed. Here’s a pic of the man performing.

Closer to the home front, my kid has been relentless with her Sesame Street listening of late. Every day it’s Rubber Ducky, People In Your Neighborhood, and so on. So let’s bring it together with the post office haul this week, shall we?

1) Is/Is 7″ – You know me like the vinyl. Me like vinyl! Two new songs from this Minneapolis trio. Played something from their This Happening EP earlier this year, so looking forward to hearing more of their burned out fuzzy garage rock. If I had to equate these guys with a Sesame Street character, I’d say they’d have to be the Cookie Monster.

2) Southerly “Champion Of The Noisy Negativists EP” – From what I recall, a moody instrumental group from Portland. When I think moody, it’s hard not to think of Oscar The Grouch… however, I think these guys are not mean spirited like Oscar, so let’s say they’re more like Mr. Snuffleupagus.

3) PDX Pop Now 2011 – Let’s stay in the northwest with this two disc sampler of Portland bands. The thing I love about compilations, especially these city centric ones, is that you get such a wide variety of music. I don’t end up liking everything, but I get exposed to stuff I may have never known. Okay, now for the Sesame Street connection… I’m not sure they were on Sesame Street, but Fraggle Rock seems most appropriate.

Other notables include new discs from Brian Eno (Grover), Mazes (Big Bird) and The Hush Now (both Ernie & Bert).

The digital track of the week goes to Real Estate for their nice new tune, It’s Real (Elmo, for sure…).

Can someone save my sanity and give me suggestions for other kid-type music? Pretty please?

Best,

Chuck P.
