What I Got at the Post Office Today with Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office.

While it’s definitely been on the warmer side, the last couple of weeks have been merciful… but that’s just me, a polar bear living in the tropics. Lots of Angelenos love this time of year. Me, not so much. I like the rest of the year when it’s cooler but not too cold. Yeah, I have a narrow strike zone.

Okay… enough whining.

Let’s see what’s in the box.

1) Vinyl! – A nice package of vinyl came this past week. New music from Cypress X Rusko (Cypress Hill, dubstep stylee), the very latest from The Very Best, and a new 12″ from Toy, whose entire new album is streaming here. One of my favorite new bands from the UK and they come highly recommended!

2) Singles! – New 7″s showed up as well this week. New single from Stealing Sheepwho have a pleasing girl group gone blip hop. A very welcome new single from food fans Turbo Fruits, who were one of my favorite bands from Thurston Moore‘s Ecstatic Peace label. Finally, a flex-disc from Mexican Institute Of Sound. I love these flexis. Back in the 90s, I’d go out and buy every magazine that came with a flexi, even if I didn’t know the band. Ah, the folly of youth.

3) Richard Hawley “Standing At The Sky’s Edge” – Big fan of this rich voiced troubadour. His first new album in 3 years, I’m looking forward to checking this out!

4) Crypts – Well, this doesn’t happen very often. When it does, it’s usually LP’s or 7″s that are snap, cracked and broken. Sad too, cause it’s looks interesting. Maybe the fine folks at the label will send me a new one.

So many honorable mentions again this week (it’s been a great few weeks at the post office) with new music from Red Fang, Tommy Stewart, The Melvins Lite, Philm, Lord Huron & Social Studies. Digital promo of the week goes to Earlimart for their new albumSystem Preferences.

Okay! That’s all this week. I’m going to give my feet a rest after a couple of days of punishment at FYF (ah, but the ears thank me). You go listen to some new music, and if you hear anything interesting (or better yet, created it yourself!) let me know.

Best,
Chuck P. (chuckp@kcrw.org)
