What I Got at the Post Office Today with Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

… and we’re back! Been out of touch aside from the Local Band We Love features recently for both Electric Flower and NO. Good to be back.

Lots of great happenings over the holidays. Getting mail wasn’t one of them. The flood has commenced tho, so here are some highlights of the most recent batch.

Vinyl! Got a package from lo-bit landscape which is the label for the band Nihiti. A couple LP’s of their stuff and another artist named Viktor Timofeev. Experimental and adventurous listening, judging from past Nihiti releases. Excited, I am. Talking like Yoda, I will not do any longer.

Baron Von Luxxury has a new one out called The Last Seduction and not only is the music incredible, but the artwork is top notch. More reason to get the CD version and not steal the music from the internet. As if you needed another reason to buy the CD… stealing music is illegal! Duh.

Jakob Olausson‘s new CD is called Morning & Sunrise and it’s out on the always reliable De Stijl Records. Expecting some low key avant folk on this one. It’s been a few years since his debut, so I’m looking forward to hearing the evolution from the previous record.

One of my favorite new band names. I Hate You Just Kidding are from LA. A bio included in the package references bands like Azure Ray, The Shins, Beach House and more. Sounds wonderful. I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the great local music happening right now, but excited to hear more. There is so much going on in this city. This may be the year a lot of LA bands break out. Like, an epidemic of great local music. I’m game to catch the fever.

Honorable mentions include the new project by Jennifer Herrema called Black Bananas, Great Lake Swimmers, Neverever & Kathleen Edwards with the digital promo of the week from Rodrigo Y Gabriela and their new album Area 52, which include tracks from their discography rerecorded with a full Cuban backing group. Add a whole new dimension to their music. Excellence!

More next week!

Cheers,
Chuck P.
