What I Got at the Post Office Today with Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Four hours without power last night. The rain was awesome, but yeah… being without power is less fun. Still, the iPod provided a soundtrack to a lovely candle lit evening with the wife and we talked. Remember talking?

The goods are drying up at the ol’ po box, as they tend to do at this time of year, so I’ve had to save up for todays post. Some really good goodies here today…

1) Dischord package – Wowsers. Love me some Dischord goodness. The new 7″ single from The Evens (Ian & Amy MacKaye) and the latest project from J. Robbins of Jawbox. It’s called Office Of Future Plans and it sounds kinda like Jawbox, so if you’re a fan, get on it.

2) Sea Lions – From Oxnard! I’d never heard of a band from Oxnard, so I’m stoked. Got married in Oxnard. Sea Lions are exactly what you would expect from Slumberland Records, precious and precocious pop garage. I would be surprised if DJ Marion Hodges has not played this band yet. (Editor’s Note: not only has she played them, she wrote a blog about them! read it here)

3) Gaslight Anthem – Their iTunes session. Great classic rock ‘n’ roll sound with these guys, so looking forward to hearing this session. Four of the seven tracks are covers (The Who, Tom Petty, The Animals & Pearl Jam (Pearl Jam???)) and the other three are unfamiliar to me so they may be newer. Should be a fun ride.

4) Brian Eno – New album from Eno with words from Rick Holland. Reminds me a bit of the Eno/Byrne collection, even though I haven’t heard it yet. At any rate, Eno is usually pretty consistent (as in good) so this will be worth the effort.

5) Vinyl! – A couple of interesting pieces with mind bending covers. I almost got vertigo looking at the new album from Apteka called Gargoyle Days plus, there is a 10″ from Body Language. They don’t make as many 10″ albums as they used to, so it’s nice to see them when the come to the post office. I know nothing about these two artists so it’s music exploration time!

Honorable mentions include Stanton Davis, the new full length from Cass McCombs and a thank you card from the Through & Through Gospel Review. It’s always nice to receive those thank you cards, but not necessary. I’m just stoked I get to hear the music. The digital promo of the week goes to Black Bananas for the new single, Rad Times. Jennifer Herrema from Royal Trux/RTX back with something totally different and fun. Seek it out or listen to my latest show to hear that incredible new track!

Thanks for reading and be sure to send your music along to the radio station attention Chuck P. to possibly be included on this post or send to the pobox info below.

Merry Holidays!

Chuck P.
