Jack White – or his label Third Man Records – on it, immediately gets my attention. Jack’s taste level is pretty high (except for that one song he did with fellow Detroit natives Insane Clown Posse, still can’t explain that one).

So when I was sent a single from 21-year-old Willy Moon, I was intrigued. I liked his name (yes, that matters) and I really liked the old-timey photo. The whole aesthetic was appealing.

The single “Railroad Track” manages to make a big statement in just over 2 minutes – with Willy’s wails, a heavy beat, whistles and a wild mix of background sounds. Check out the video, filmed in Nashville.

As DJ Chris Douridas says, the New Zealand native (now based in London) “blends 50’s sensibilities and Fatboy Slim style production”. He writes, records and produces all his own work. He’s also had the good luck of having his music featured in a recent Apple iPod campaign.

Willy plays LA tonight as part of Chris’ weekly residency at Bardot called School Night. It’s free with RSVP if you’re over 21.
