KCRW Broadcast 247

Fanatics! I have been in Los Angeles for a few days and I believe I am beginning to thaw. The film is done and now it’s with the editors.

Tonight’s show is a very interesting mixed bag of stuff. I bet that many of you have heard tonight’s first track a few times in your life but perhaps not this mix, pretty cool. From a massive CD set of studio Zeppelin. Here’s where I got it: http://musictravellerstwo.blogspot.com/2013/03/led-zeppelin-studio-magik-sessions-1968.html

Check out the version of Rock the Casbah, very different than the one on Combat Rock. This is from that bootleg I was telling you about in the show notes twp weeks ago. Here is where I got the tunes: http://lightingstrikes.blogspot.ca/2012/06/clash-rat-patrol-from-fort-bragg-2-cd.html.

Tonight’s MC5 track might my favorite on of theirs besides Look At You, just because it’s so strange and the guitar sounds so cool.

First time we have ever played a track from the Danish band Before. Here’s a small write up copped from their page on Discogs:

“Danish punk/rock band 1980-1983. At it’s time considered one of the most important punk bands in Denmark. Fronted by vocalist Fritz Bonfils, the band featured a dark and intense music recollecting Velvet Underground, The Doors and Joy Division, and their only album considered a landmark in Danish punk.

In the earliest incarnation of this short-lived band, the line up included Danish Electronica pioneer Martin Hall and future lead-singer of Sort Sol, Steen Jørgensen. Michael Rasmussen would later be with the Sandmen.”

The vinyl of the album and singles are pretty expensive. If you find this music to your liking, here’s a place to check out the rest: http://wilddevilrules.blogspot.com/2012/03/before-wish-of-life-lp-1982.html

I could not resist a little Christmas music but was careful to keep things in check. The Hendrix track wins as thankfully, it’s all instrumental. I can’t take the lyrics of all those songs but Hendrix pulls it off instrumentally and Iggy takes Bing Crosby’s face straight to Hell, so that is working for me.

A lot of new and interesting stuff in our second hour. Another track from the new VUM album Psychotropic Jukebox (remember, they are playing every Monday of December at the Echo: http://www.theecho.com/event/410799-monday-night-residency-vum-los-angeles/), J Mascis covers Syd Barrett and the last four tracks are all new releases. That Ty Segall Gemini LP, the demos of the Twins album is really cool. I wish it had not been so limited and so swooped on by the pirates. I think it was hard for a lot of fans to get a copy at a price that was ridiculous. If one were to look around on the internet, one might be able to find a downloadable version, perhaps even in FLAC, just saying. We are playing a track from it tonight and will stay with it as the weeks go on.

I rocked Thee Oh Sees Singles Vol. 3 LP last night, really great. The White Fence live album is really happening as well. We finish the night with a track from the new Hisato Higuchi album. I have not had a chance to dig too deeply into this one yet but on first listen, it’s sounding good to me.

Next week, perhaps some new Fushitsusha and Steven R Smith and a bunch of other stuff that hopefully you will dig. We are live in the studio this Sunday, so listen in if you can.

Stay loose and STAY FANATIC!!!
