MBE Aug. 19: Sounds from the sock hop and National Radio Day love

Hosted by and

Who better to help ring in National Radio Day than R&B super producer Raphael Saadiq, with his 2011 release “Radio”? In the spirit of championing record playing, story telling, and the magic of the moment, we’ve got Jamiroquai’s timeless classic “Virtual Insanity” by request (and released 26 years ago today), “Rushes” from Frank Ocean’s unexpected visual album “Endless” (celebrating its 5 year anniversary today), and the perfect song “Amoeba” by singer-songwriter Clairo (who turned 24 yesterday). All in the name of live radio!

Plus, a bit of ‘50s-flavored nostalgia via today’s David Lynch song pick “At the Hop” by Danny & the Juniors (released in 1957), and on the new single from legendary journeyman Lee Fields. Although just released on Fields’s forthcoming record, “Ordinary Lives” comes dripping in old school sweet soul that has us harkening back to the good ol’ days when skidding around in your socks across the wood floor of your local gymnasium was a thing.
