Nov 3, 2023

On Friday, Nov. 10, Cat Power will release a new LP — Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert. The album is something of a happy accident, as the driving force of behind Cat Power, Chan Marshall, tells KCRW’s Program Director of Music Anne Litt: “We were offered a show at the Royal Albert Hall on Nov. 5 [2022], Guy Fawkes Day, and I said ‘heck yeah! But only if I can do the Dylan record.’”

Lot’s of records can be described as the Dylan record, but Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert has the distinction of being the one where Dylan “went electric” halfway through, and chaos ensued. Cat Power describes a different experience. “It’s like we were 5 year olds on the same little league team [including the audience], Marshall says. “We’d all just played a great game and we won our own championship that we created for ourselves.”

That sense of being a part of the winning team is palpable through today’s MBE as Marshall and her bandmates Aaron Embry (harmonica and wurlitzer), and Henry Munson (acoustic guitar) lovingly present: “She Belongs To Me,” “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue,” “4th Time Around,” and “Just Like A Woman” live from KCRW HQ. It is the band’s only radio appearance ahead of the album release. The session begins at the two hour and seventeen minute mark when you click the player button to your left. Immerse yourself now.
