Hearst Foes Target Land Development Loophole

The Hearst Corporation owns 83,000 acres of pristine cattle range that sweeps down the mountain from Hearst Castle to the San Simeon coast. Hearst claim that it has no plans to develop the land, but environmentalists say the company is engaged in a "high-profile scam" used by speculators to make big profits at the expense of taxpayers and private foundations. Legislators in Sacramento are trying to plug the loophole in state law. We speak with an Assemblywoman and environmentalist who support the pending legislation, and from a private property rights advocate who does not.

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky fears the cuts will devastate LA County's teetering system, which, despite a 500 million-dollar shortfall, serves some three million indigents.
