Happy ‘Bike Week!’

Yes, yes, we all know Los Angeles is supposed to be the Kingdom of the Car and the Fiefdom of the Freeway. But this week, L.A. cyclists are getting some love, attention and care. It’s all part of  Bike Week L.A., an annual event that celebrates bicycle culture in the region and encourages people to try commuting using pedal power.

Bike Week L.A. events include  bicycle repair classes at local bike shops and cooperatives, guided rides on different communities’ bicycle lanes, free use of public transportation for people boarding with their bikes, and discounts at local customers for customers who bike in.  Even God plays a role in Bike Week L.A., with the annual Blessing of the Bicycles event.

If you want more information about the cornucopia of cycling events offered this week, check out the schedule and information offered by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority here

L. A. Bicycle Week is all about celebrating mobility on two-wheels instead of four and promoting conversations about how to make L.A. County more bike-friendly.

Communities across Southern California continue to expand and improve their bicycle lanes, but cycling activists say more has to be done to connect this growing network of lanes so that we get a truly region-wide bicycle transportation system.
