We learned suddenly on Tuesday night that, after insulting Mexico for a year, Donald Trump would be visiting President Enrique Peña Nieto. "It's impossible to explain how this happened," said Univision's KMEX anchor León Krauze, "in Mexico this has been read as an absolute disaster." From Trump's side, most read the visit as a success. As Josh Barro explained, he was trying to combat the idea that he is too much of a bigot to be president and that he could do diplomacy on some level. "It was a low bar," said syndicated columnist and Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Institute Mona Charen, "he stood at a podium, he did not bite the ankle of the president of Mexico." Rich Lowry said he seemed as surprised as anyone that he pulled the whole thing off.
