State regulators have been under intense scrutiny in recent history, overseeing utilities that are shutting down or shoring up nuclear power plants; dealing with an environmental disaster that’s displaced thousands of people; even trying to coordinate the cleanup of a now-shuttered battery plant that poisoned the soil – and people – of homes nearby. So this week comes a push to do something about those agencies that are responsible for regulating and overseeing companies, whose environmental records have been less than stellar -- even, perhaps, criminal.
