Debate for Secretary of State

California-s Secretary of State oversees elections and keeps tab on campaign expenses as well as lobbyists. The Secretary also administers records relating to corporations and trademarks. Incumbent Bill Jones, the only Republican holding statewide office, is vacating the office because of term limits. The major party candidates vying to replace him as California-s chief election officer are liberal, Democratic Assemblyman Kevin Shelley of San Francisco and conservative, former Republican Assemblyman Keith Olberg of Victorville. Shelly and Olberg face off on voter apathy, rejuvenating California-s electorate and modernizing the state-s voting system. Newsmaker: Claims against Sheriff-s Deputies Not Investigated Last year, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca got what he wanted, the most far-reaching civilian oversight board in the country. However, this week, the Office of Independent Review reports that, for 10 years, Baca-s Department failed to investigate more than 800 claims of wrongdoing by Sheriff-s deputies. Sheriff Baca responds to the IOR-s findings and claims of unresolved cases. Reporter's Notebook: Angels- First Trip to the World Series After 41 years, the Angels are standing at the doorway to Baseball Heaven. When the Angels won the pennant last night, one sportswriter could compare the moment to the team-s first game. The Los Angeles Times- Ross Newhan, who has been there since the beginning, joyfully reports on the remarkable transformation of Anaheim-s pride and joy.
