UCLA Tobacco Ban Puts LA Ahead of the Pack

Hosted by

Today's May Day march for immigration reform brought a rainbow coalition to downtown Los Angeles. That's been business as usual for the past few years, but this time there's a difference. With legislation headed to the floor of the US Senate, marchers wore T-shirts reading, the "TIME IS NOW." We hear about family unification and the role of organized labor. Also, UCLA has become a smoke-free campus — the first in the University System. We talk to supporters, critics of "Nanny-State" regulations and hear about the plight of secret smokers in health-conscious LA.

Image-for-WWLA.jpgOn our rebroadcast of today's To the Point, unemployment and slow growth in Europe are bringing an end to the "austerity" era of spending cuts and increased taxes. Was "austerity" a dangerous idea in the first place? Will new ideas about economic reality make a difference to politicians in Washington?
