Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is in Tehran, trying to persuade Iran to suspend its nuclear program. This after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that Iranian scientists had produced enriched uranium at a level sufficient to create nuclear energy, and his deputy nuclear chief declaring that the country plans to move toward large-scale enrichment. Now that Iran has formally joined the club of nuclear countries, what's the west going to do about it? Are nuclear weapons the next step? Is there a way out of the stalemate? Dan Weintraub, who's following the story for the Sacramento Bee, says the Governor is caught between two political goals.
