LA Mayor Jim Hahn, an Incumbent with Problems

Hosted by
This evening, Channel 2 broadcasts the last debate of this year-s mayoral race. Meantime, with exactly a week to go before Election Day, the LA Times poll shows incumbent Jim Hahn in a virtual three-way tie with two former Assembly Speakers. Antonio Villaraigosa has 24%, Bob Hertzberg 21% and Hahn 20%--all within the 4% margin of error. Hertzberg has showed the biggest increase in support since the last poll, picking up voters who supported Hahn four years ago, especially in the San Fernando Valley. Still, with 19% still undecided, there could be big changes between now and next Tuesday. We talk with the Mayor about the campaign, his record, and what to expect in the next seven days.
  • Making News: Governor Schwarzenegger Backs Initiatives for Special Election
Governor Schwarzenegger made good on his word today, the deadline he set for legislative action on proposals to change the way state government works. He-ll start collecting signatures for initiative campaigns to get voters to enact them instead. John Myers, Capitol reporter for San Francisco public radio station KQED, says support for a special election diminishes when voters hear how costly it would be.
