Police Commission Ousts LAPD Chief Bernard Parks

Hosted by Warren Olney Apr. 09, 2002
By a 4-to-1 vote, the Board of Los Angeles Police Commissioners opted not to reappoint LA Police Chief Bernard Parks to a second five-year term. Commission President Rick Caruso attributed Parks' lack of success in improving police morale as one reason for his dismissal. Parks expressed disappointment in the decision and in Mayor Jim Hahn for his early declaration of his desire for new police management. The 37-year veteran of the LAPD vowed to take his fight for reappointment to the City Council. We hear the reasons and ramifications of today's decision from Reverand Cecil Murray of the First AME Church, civil rights attorney Connie Rice, USC law professor Erwin Chemerinsky, and City Council members Cindy Miscikowski and Mark Ridley-Thomas.
