    State Raises Red Flag on Air Quality in Jewelry Di

    The Jewelry District, with its booming trade that extends all over the world, is one of the economic engines of downtown LA. But now the district finds itself under a cloud, literally and figuratively, after state regulators discovered hazardous levels of heavy metals that make the air unsafe in one of the area's thirty-five buildings. Their order to close the building has jewelry makers alarmed. We weigh the environmental and economic risks, and look at the cooperative effort to develop a viable plan for cutting emissions, with state, civic and local business leaders. Newsmaker: Orange County News Channel Shuts Down - Adelphia Communications has pulled the plug on the 11-year old Orange County News Channel. The 24-hour news station, once owned by the Orange County Register, never managed to turn a profit. Will Swaim, editor of the OC Weekly has more on the little TV station that couldn't compete with other media outlets. Reporter's Notebook: No State Money for Community Colleges Repairs or Equipment - In addition to a ten-year maintenance backlog, community colleges also need equipment for libraries and teaching aids, so its leaders were stunned when Governor Davis decimated technology and maintenance funds. Thomas Nussbaum, Chancellor of the California Community Colleges' Board of Governors, responds to Governor Davis veto.
