In Auschwitz, the infamous Dr. Mengele conducted horrifying physical and psychological experiments on concentration camp prisoners. He had a particular fascination with twins and biological anomalies. Affinity Konar's Mischling (meaning mixed blood) is the story of twin sisters who find themselves imprisoned in Dr. Mengele's "zoo." Their emotional fortitude, both as a pair and as individuals, is the subject of this intense, nearly unbearable novel. Konar hypothesizes that the very long time it took her to write the book was a function of her own disinclination to face the terror of Dr. Mengele.
