Geoff Dyer's The Ongoing Moment (Pantheon) presents a series of improvisations and responses to photography, particular photographs and ideas about photography. There are no chapters. Instead, one brief section leads to another, making it almost impossible to put the book down. Here, we explore how the book's organizing principle -- a focus on what the pictures show rather than their photographers -- led, inevitably, to it's unusual form.
