    T.C. Boyle's newest novel contains elements of sea-adventure story and eco-thriller. In it, he brings together the themes of his life's work, as he explores the interstices of the green-movement and the animal rights community in their efforts to preserve the Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara. As always in Boyle, to be human is to err, and here the human follies are species-wide and head-on.
