    "When I was a younger writer, I really let myself loose, today I really weigh every word," says Thomas McGuane as he reveals his special recipe for comedy. He stays three or four steps ahead of the reader at all times, so he can be constantly surprising. Crow Fair (Knopf), his new book of stories, is a demonstration model of McGuane's verbal surprises and his deep insight into his characters.
