audio edition of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, read by actor Casey Affleck. The classic 1905/1906 novel about a Lithuanian immigrant working in Chicago’s meat packing industry lead to widespread food safety reform. Public reaction to the novel lead to the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. Sinclair’s descriptions of food contamination in the plants are revolting — and totally compelling.
