Santa Monica Farmers’ Market and brings the latest news from farmers and chefs.

This week Murray Family Farmsis back with Brooks cherries, white peaches and yellow nectarines. Owner Steve Murray says his cherry crop is about 10% of normal due to water shortages and extreme heat.

Sweet Rose Creamery ice cream chef Shiho Yoshikawa was thrilled to find both cherries and papayas (more on that next week) at Wednesday’s market. She is also using spring herbs in her seasonal ice creams and sorbets at Sweet Rose Creamery.

What You Should Buy This Weekend from the Farmers’ Market:

– Papayas from Golden State Papaya, the first commercial papaya grower in the state of CA. This is their first week at the Wednesday Santa Monica Market.

– Brooks cherries from Murray Family Farms out of Bakersfield. They’re hosting a Cherry Festival on Saturday, May 2nd.

– Look for yellow nectarines from Peacock Family Farms with growing locations in Arroyo Grande and Dinuba. The season is unusually early, but they nectarines are still sweet and juicy!

– Spring herbs at Maggie’s Farm in Agoura Hills. Ice cream chef Shiho Yoshikawa uses their basil for her basil strawberry ice cream.
