    Indian Independence

August 15th marks India's 50th anniversary of independence from the British, so we're going to look at the food of India in order to celebrate this diverse and culturally rich country. Mira Advani is our cultural liaison and will talk us through Artesia's Little India as well as give us perspective on this Indian holiday and tell us where we can celebrate; noted LA Times food writer, Barbara Hansen is also with us to tell us about the rices and spices of the Indian kitchen, including some new arrivals from the Asian sub-continent; home cook Kusum Dewan talks about the healing properties of the peculiar-looking bitter melon; and Navraj Singh, owner of India's Oven restaurant in West Los Angeles, shows us the pleasures of a tandoor oven.
