Once again we are excited to present Stacie Hunt’s KCRW Wine Club selections for the 2013 Winter Pledge Drive. Stacie (who comes from

Du Vin Wine and Spirits and

Splash Productions) is our resident wine guru and she has selected three unique bottles for us. In particular, Stacie highlights emerging varietals and wine regions in this package.

Listeners who pledge $20 or more per month can choose this package as their premium. Simply call during

Good Food (this Saturday, February 2nd, 11-Noon) or

    join online

. And thanks! Keep reading for her selections…

2011, BOULON MORGON, VIEILLE VIGNES, BEAUJOLAIS, FRANCE

A Cru Beaujolais — not to be confused with the bubble-gum, Beaujolais Noveau — also made from Gamay. The Gamay grape has long been dismissed, yet is one of the oldest and most character-filled grapes around. It’s one of the earliest in California, having been brought to the state by the early Spanish and French immigrants.

2011, MARTINO PEDRO XIMENEZ, JEREZ, SPAIN

This is a primary grape in Sherry. Just now, there are a few hundred cases circulating (and we’ve nabbed some of this special 3-bottle package) in the US that are vinified as a dry, white wine. You’ve never tasted anything quite like this, it just cannot be categorized.

    2009 BOUZA TANNAT, URUGUAY

Uruguay is the flipside of Argentina. Whereas Argentine wines are high and dry and the epitome of New World winemaking, Uruguay is sea level moist and maritime. Their wines reflect sophisiticated, lower alcohol wines, more on the order of northern Spain or Bordeaux. Tannat is the grape, known now to have the highest amount of anti-oxident of any wine produced. It’s the primary red grape from Uruguay, a country that is beginning to get its just due for producing wines of full flavor, taking rustic varietals into a level of sophistication.
