Deep End Diner and Good Food contributor Eddie Lin headed to Rancho Cucamonga to the Honeyville store to find out what he needed to get for his survival kit. Living in California, you have to be ready if disaster strikes. At the store – which he said looks like a giant convenience store – he spoke to Johnny Ferry. Johnny says that when food and water are scarce during an emergency, we need to be prepared:

  • Plan to have 1 gallon of water per person, per day.

  • Don’t rely on plastic bottled water as bacteria can leach into the soil.

  • When buying canned goods, be sure to check the shelf life. Ideally, you want items that will last decades.

  • Don’t forget to set aside supplies like extra glasses and first aid kits.

  • How your items are stored is important. Make sure the packaging won’t degrade if it’s stored for decades.

  • Find more tips here.

Eddie tried Honeyville’s various freeze-dried items… Hear about it on Good Food and keep reading for pictures…
