Good Food listener Kevin Austin, along with his partner James Bailey, have an Oscar tradition. Each year he creates an elaborate Oscar themed menu based on the films in that year’s awards show. His menu was so beautiful I just had to share it with other listeners. He had me with his aperitif, a Hemingway inspired cocktail – Death in the Afternoon – honoring Midnight in Paris. Keep reading for his menu and more photos…

Honoring Midnight in Paris

Death in the Afternoon

One of Hemingway’s favorite cocktails:

champagne with a splash of Absinthe, the Green Fairy of Parisian artists and writers.

Hemingway in Midnight in Paris: “You’ll never write well if you fear dying.”

Honoring The Descendants

Kipona Aloha

Fresh ahi tuna with ginger, garlic, soy sauce and chili.

Served with wonton chips and a lilikoi cosmopolitan with passion fruit vodka and hibiscus cranberry.

Pineapple salsa for the vegetarians.

Honoring Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Black

Black quinoa with black figs, orange and cumin.

Honoring Moneyball

Peanuts and Cracker Jack

Roasted peanut soup with spicy caramel corn garnish.

Honoring The Help

“Minny don’t buuuurn chicken!”

A southern salad of fried chicken, roasted butternut squash, kale, mustard and dandelion greens.

You didn’t really think you were getting pie, did you?

Honoring The Artist

Brown Derby Short Ribs

One of the specialties of the house, this is the original recipe

from the legendary eatery of early Hollywood. Served with…

Honoring War Horse

Save the Farm

Mashed yellow turnips with crispy shallots.

Honoring The Tree of Life

Forbidden Fruit

We could have done a menu item based on the immaculate state of humanity

represented by the tree, but sin is always more fun…

An apple pairing: ambrosia with Brillat-Savarin Affine′ • fuji with gorgonzola dolce • gala with Cabot cheddar

Honoring Hugo

Le Voyage dans la Lune

Chocolate oatmeal Moon Pies with sour cherries and pecans.

Served with chocolate dipping sauce.

After the Show

Coffee, tea, liqueur

Special thanks, as always, to Miss Sharon and Miss Emilia for their assistance
