Huntington Beach versus Affordable Housing

Huntington Beach continues to fight California officials regarding the number of affordable housing units to be built within city limits as part of new developments. In a letter sent last month, city attorney Michael Gates asked the California Department of Housing and Community Development and the Southern California Association of Governments to lessen the number, citing what he claimed were flawed population-increase predictions in Surf City. This isn't the first time the city has tried to shirk its affordable-housing requirements; in November, it lost a lawsuit filed by a nonprofit after Huntington Beach altered a housing plan that drastically reduced the number of affordable housing units. With hundreds of city residents supporting the city's positions, is this a case of official NIMBYism — or is there more to the story?
