    ‘A monument to white supremacy’: Activists call for the removal of Drake’s Cross in San Francisco

    Activists in Marin County are calling for the renaming of places commemorating Sir Francis Drake, the colonizer who sailed around the world in the 16th century.

    Activists in Marin County are calling for the renaming of places commemorating Sir Francis Drake, the colonizer who sailed around the world in the 16th century. But one monument to Drake has gone largely unnoticed amid calls to tear down monuments to problematic people and parts of American history.

    Drake's Cross is 60 feet tall and sits in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Opponents call it a “monument to white supremacy.”
