President Donald Trump was at a campaign rally in North Carolina yesterday, basking in chants of “send her back.” Those chants were directed at Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Somali refugee.

Trump now says he’s “not happy” about the rally chants. Even though earlier this week, he tweeted the same thing about Omar and the rest of “The Squad,” Michigan’s Rashida Talib, Massachusetts’ Ayana Pressly, and New York’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Overall, public polling shows the majority of Americans who knew about Trump’s tweets thought they were offensive. But Trump appears to see some political edge in playing up race heading into 2020, which plays well with his base.
