SWAT teams were first created here in Los Angeles after the 1965 Watts riots. Since then, the use of SWAT teams has increased across the country. The so-called “militarization” of the police became controversial after we saw scenes of officers in armored vehicles facing down protesters in Ferguson, Missouri last year.
