Refugees and migrants continue to flee their home countries. Another wave of African migrants attempted to cross the Mediterranean this week and more than 11,000 of them were rescued by the Italian Coast Guard and aid groups. Many of them were picked up stranded off the coast of Libya in dinghies and boats that are not equipped to make the crossing. Aris Messinis is a photographer with Agence France Presse who was on one of the rescue boats off the Libyan coast this week. His pictures of the ordeal appear in Thursday’s New York Times in a photo essay titled “Stepping Over the Dead on a Migrant Boat.”
