Attorney General William Barr has unilaterally moved to keep some asylum seekers in jail indefinitely while their claims are processed. Barr’s order, signed last night, would deny potentially tens of thousands of immigrants the opportunity for a bond hearing in front of a judge to argue for their release while they wait to find out if they can stay in the U.S. The policy won’t go into effect for a few months, but it marks the latest effort by the Trump administration to crack down on border crossings.
