President Trump has promised to keep guns away from people who suffer mental illness. He also told reporters last week that the National Rifle Association would be “fully represented and respected” as the White House and Congress try to stem gun violence in America.

But the NRA’s influence may be waning due to self-inflicted turmoil and resentment after this summer’s trio of mass shootings in Texas, Ohio and California.
