A Decade in the Making, ‘The Dog’ Finally Has Its Day

Following a viewing of Dog Day Afternoon, Allison Berg and Frank Keraudren decided they’d seek out the bank robber who inspired the movie. They found Jon Wojtowicz with relative ease and decided to spend a year making a documentary about him. That was more than a decade ago. Berg and Keraudren tell Kim Masters about the multi-year adventure in filmmaking that followed. The filmmakers found themselves drawn into Wojtowicz’s world, spending hours upon hours with his family and friends, funding the film themselves for years at a time. Their resulting documentary is called The Dog, which is also what Wojtowicz called himself.
