The law forbids gays and lesbians from the US military, but it's widely acknowledged that many serve their country anyway. In 1993, President Clinton signed " Don't Ask, Don't Tell ," which allows them to stay as long as they don't reveal their sexual orientation.

In 1993, President Clinton signed "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which allows them to stay as long as they don't reveal their sexual orientation. As a candidate, President Obama promised repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," but it hasn't happened. Now, the White House has worked out a compromise.
