KCRW Djs since the beginning of June and, with the news today that he’s signed to one of my favorite labels Sub Pop, I thought it was time to share some of his music on the blog.

The first thing you notice about Daughn is that not only is he a male (I think his name makes it questionable) but he has this deep, haunting baritone.

Slightly creepy, but offset by the spacy yet enticing music he sings over. Especially in the case of “Lookin Back on 99“.

Daughn Gibson – Lookin Back on ’99 by brooklynvegan

His solo debut album “All Hell” garnered an 8.1 rating on Pitchfork and Spin called it one of the 40 best albums of the year.

It certainly stands out on it’s own as his main influence is more unique than most bands we see these days. It was his stint as a cross-country truck drive that inspired his “sound sculptor” approach, merging classic country balladeering with electronic beats – think Lee Hazelwood meets James Blake.

He’ll be in LA soon playing as part of FYF fest over Labor Day Weekend.
