    Bahamas – “Stronger Than That”

I’ll be honest. It took me a couple listens to get into the new Bahamas album.

But once I did, I fell for it hard. There’s always something more rewarding about those albums that require a closer listen, a bit more attention and focus to make their full impact. In 2014, focus is ever harder to come by so the reward is greater.

This is a joyous heart filling, 2 ½ minute pop song.

    Hollie Cook – “99”

Liza Richardson turned me on to Hollie Cook around her excellent 2011 debut solo album. She’s back with “Twice” and, just like the first one, it’s a solid release through and through.

    Perfect summertime reggae vibes.

    Alvvays – “Adult Diversion”

I had never heard of Alvvays when I got their self-titled album in the mail and decided to randomly pop it in the stereo a few weeks ago.

I never expect much in that situation so I was happily surprised to find an extremely catchy indie pop record.

Fans of Best Coast should love this easy breezy tune. (They’re from Toronto so the beachy vibes are imported 🙂

The New Pornographers – “Brill Bruisers”

Canadian super group The New Pornographers are one of my all time favorite power pop bands and this song captures everything I love about them – it blasts off in the first second and never loses steam.

I’m a sucker for Neko Case and somehow she always makes more of an impact in a supporting role behind A.C. Newman‘s lead vocals.

It’s the title track from their first new album in four years, due August 25. It’s definitely a fine addition to their catalogue.

They play Pappy and Harriets on October 15 and I will be there!
