Clams Casino — Instrumentals

Clams Casino came onto most people’s radar in 2011 with his work on A$AP Rocky’s game-changing “LiveLoveA$AP mixtape”.

Even though Rocky’s name was on the front of the release, it was every bit the showcase for Clams’ production work (as well as that of Spaceghost Purrp) as it was for A$AP Rocky’s effortless flow.

Seemingly overnight Rocky and Clams went from virtual unknowns to stars on the rise.

2013 saw the release of A$AP Rocky’s eagerly anticipated proper debut, “Long.Live.A$AP”. While the album featured a who’s who of top shelf producers including Skrillex, Danger Mouse, Hit-Boy and a pair of tracks with Clams Casino, it didn’t quite have the same impact as “LiveLoveA$AP”.

This week Clams Casino released his third and final instrumental mixtape featuring his most recent production work for A$AP Rocky, JJ Doom, and Mac Miller, as well as a handful of previously unreleased beats.

Clams’ bass-heavy ethereal compositions feel like one part DJ Screw and two parts Boards of Canada. Like the first two volumes, Instrumental Mixtape 3 works just as well (and in some cases better) as a standalone release as it does backing rappers.

Blood Orange — “You’re Not Good Enough” (Holy Ghost! remix)

After gracing us with their Drake cover a couple months ago, Holy Ghost! are back with another free track this week — this time with a dancefloor ready rework of Blood Orange’s “You’re Not Good Enough” (my personal favorite track on the “Cupid Deluxe” album, fwiw.

We’re sending positive vibes out to Dev Hynes (a.k.a. Blood Orange) after hearing about his apartment burning down this week, taking all of his stuff (including hard drives full of music and his cute little dog, Cupid) with it. Dev took down the donation page set up to help him get back on his feet, but maybe we can all help him out by picking up a copy of “Cupid Deluxe” this weekend.
