Gustavo Arellano, the editor of the O.C. Weekly and a regular contributor to KCRW, announced his resignation on Friday from the paper.

Arellano says he decided to step down after the paper’s publisher, Duncan McIntosh Company Inc., asked him to lay off half of his staff.

Duncan McIntosh has not responded to multiple requests for comment from KCRW.

But on its Facebook page, the O.C. Weekly wrote that, “He will be missed, but his contribution to the newspaper and legacy of leadership will always be remembered.”

KCRW’s Steve Chiotakis caught up with Arellano to talk more about what happened and what’s next.
