Gilles Peterson is a trusted tastemaker with a great ear.

His tastes span a wide range, but often have world music elements, as is the case with his latest project Sonzeira, a collective of Brazilian superstars.

With the World Cup heading to Brazil in just a few weeks, there couldn’t be a better time for Gilles to take on the role of producer and capture a nation in sound.

He set up camp in Rio de Janeiro to record all-new material with a stellar line-up of Brazilian talent and the result features mesmerizing vocal performances from superstars young and old, including Seu Jorge, and the grande dame of samba, 76-year-old powerhouse Elza Soares.

KCRW is thrilled to premiere a song from the album, “Xibaba (She-Bá-Ba) [feat. Emanuelle Araújo & Chico Chagas]”

Emanuelle is asoapstar / actress and Gilles first discovered her vocal talent during an Orquestra Imperial rehearsal .

She also provides vocals on another album track, “Southern Freeez , a Freeze cover which was part of a Record Store Day release.

The album “Brasil Bam Bam Bam” will be out in the US on May 27 via Harvest Records.
