New Here We Go Magic – Make Up Your Mind

Luke Temple, who released solo albums before forming Here We Go Magic, has never had a consistent sound.

Sometimes the musical styles will vary greatly within the same record.

What IS consistent, however, is his warm voice, which I find calming, especially when it’s set against the funky, strangely 80’s synthy sounds of a song like “Make Up Your Mind”.

Then there’s the simplicity of “How Do I Know”, which kinda reminds me of what Simon & Garfunkel might sound like if they were still making music in 2012.

Listening to the album driving home from Santa Barbara, staring at the “Supermoon” on Saturday night, I enjoyed how it veered from meditative, spacious meanderings to slightly psychedelic pop, hitting on many other genres along the way. All of it good, even if it’s a little strange.

It’s hard to get to know this Luke Temple, but he is creating unquestionably good music and I guess that’s all you really need to know.

“A Different Ship” was produced by Nigel Godrich (who you may know from his work with Radiohead and U2) and is out this week.
