Pan Caliente: Coachella Preview

To say there’s something for everyone at Coachella might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s pretty darn close. If you’re a vegan, they got you covered. Need a delish cocktail actually worth the $$$? You’re set. Want to hang out at an intimate space within an enormous festival? Then find the secret bar.

Oh and there’s also music! I love the K-Pop elements that are sneaking in, and one has to admire the way the festival shifted towards pop music, while still retaining its street cred as a lifestyle brand. I was there the year Madonna did a surprise performance (I watched Editors instead) but you could feel they were tapping into a gold mine by incorporating pop stars.

But onto our beat here at Pan Caliente, let’s explore the ñ element of Coachella:

Mon Laferte – the Chilean expat, who resides in Mexico, has created a whirlwind of excitement behind her quick emerging debut. The live version instrumentation of her songs is upbeat and fun. Not to mention she is fantastic live, and puts on a great show on larger stages. (Friday 12 & 19)

Los Tucanes de Tijuana - In a strange trend that saw Los Ángeles Azules perform at Coachella last year, this year, the Mexican Norteño giants Los Tucanes will no doubt be sweating it up in matching suits and cowboy hats. It’s random AF… but a sweet notch on their belt. (Friday 12 & 19)

Rosalía – Surely one can’t deny that Rosalía’s ascent from the Latin music world to the top of the musical food chain has been monumental; however, there is a lot to be seen, including her performances. Coachella is a grand stage, and if her live show is as big as her videos, this will definitely be an artist to keep watching. (Friday 12 & 19)

The Red Pears – Reppin’ for the local Southern Cali bands, is this garage, fuzz-tone duo out of El Monte, CA. They were on the road most of March before and after SXSW, so their show should be tight. Their Rock ‘n Roll vibe will be perfect for the desert heat. (Saturday 13 & 20)

J Balvin – You cannot complete world domination without a headlining performance at Coachella. Balvin is technically a Reggaeton artist, but his mainstream appeal is huge! He will have your sunburnt body moving, and those throbbing feet shaking. No doubt, there will be special guests. (Saturday 13 & 20)

Ocho Ojos – Cesar Flores & Danny Lloyd Torres are two locals from the Coachella Valley making exciting psychedelic Cumbias. It’s technically a hometown gig for the Latin-fusion duo, albeit one of the larger ones. If you’re looking for a groove, this is where you’ll find it. (Sunday 14 & 21)
